Finding a house in a village with a garden, and with an outbuilding,
is considered LUCK! And with an original, fully working bread baking oven as well?
How lucky can one be!

In 2004, when we rented down below the village, we looked at the house you can glimpse behind the outbuilding, because we had already fallen in love with the area and seriously considered buying "something". But with no garden, no outbuilding, and no prospect of being able to buy some ground from the neighbor we decided not to buy. For us, from the west coast of Norway, being able to "live outside" most of the year; a garden is a must.

And now: Extra Bonus: an outbuilding, AND a pizza oven and even a garden with a view!

Main Storage Room. What am I allowed to do?

Again I had to check with our geometra to find out the rules.  No cement outside / fixed installations,
and no permanent changes inside the old building. Mamma Mia!

To make the floor due to these regulations I used a mixture of sand and cement that I just used to
level the floor, but not adding water. Then I spread the slabs. Afterwards I sprayed the floor with water.
Now every tile can easily be removed together with the sand/cement underneath.

Now I had a good overview of the room and could make more detailed plans for how to organize it.
To the left of the entrance you had the inside of the pizza oven. I decided to do the same on the top
of the oven as I did on the floor, which gave me even more storage room.

When I had finished the floor  (Concrete slabs) I decided to build a "loft" = a new area above for storage.
Spoke with our geometro and was again told that I could not do permanent changes to the capanna,
so I built a wooden deck supported by solid chestnut beams. The beams were not attached to the floor
but were kept in place by its own weight.

UTILITYROOM

First I thought I would build new walls inside, using rods and panel.
But the walls were quite nice when cleaned, AND, they were obviously very old.
Instead we installed part of the second kitchen from the house,
built a shelf with down-lights, installed frig, rearranged some of the
other stuff, and ....... A practical out door kitchen.

THE PIZZAOVEN

The wood baking oven is big, 1,5 meters in diameter, and very old.
At the front the main stone aboe the opening was broken and needed a fix.
This to contain the heat better when using it for baking after cooking.
Heat resistant brick and special cement. Perfect!

THE GARDEN

The grass was of poor quality and humid during the evenings. We decided to remove it
and use tiles in stead. Terracotta.
No cement! So after having removed the grass we used a mix of fine sand and chalk
to level the ground, put the tiles on, and then water it. Again: Nothing permanent.

We also put in a circular pool, above ground (only option due to regulation)
and built a small deck over the pump area and a fence at the front.
For us; a garden that have it all.

The Garden

My wife was with me the first 2 weeks after the purchase.

The first week we prepared space for living, and the second I started to empty the
main storage room in the garden while she continued inside.

The floor in the shed was wet soil. Decided to level the floor and then

use cement slabs to have a solid and dry floor. I had brought a big

crate of tools from Norway, also a garden loader, 600 kilos in all,

so I needed storage space. As I emptied the shed I sorted everything

that I thought could be used later, and the rest we transported to

the waste facility. Had to have some kind of an overview.

From then on it was step by step taking ownership of the building

and to start making plans of how I could best use it.
